Santa Ynez Valley Amateur Radio
Annual Events and Activities

The amateur radio operators of the Santa Ynez Valley participate in several events on a regular annual basis. Please see our Calendar of Upcoming Events for more specific detail on those events scheduled in the near future and our Regular Events for those that occur on a more frequent basis (daily, weekly, monthly).

Questions regarding these events or new requests may be directed to our event chairman, Buzz Davis (KE6BQC). Please contact Anne Bixler (KD6HJO) with updates and corrections.

~ January ~

AYSO Youth Soccer - end of January (Saturday/Sunday January 24th/25th, 2004)
The Santa Ynez Valley Amateur Radio Operators provide assistance with the AYSO Youth Soccer Tournament. Teams from all over in several age brackets come to this event and several fields in multiple locations are used. The Amateur Radio Operators assist by getting the game scores from the multiple locations to the main area.

~ March ~

SCOR Century - 2nd Saturday in March (Saturday, March 13th, 2004)
The SCOR Cardiac Cyclists Club has an annual century and half-century bike ride every March. SCOR stands for Specialized Coronary Outpatient Rehabilitation. This event is one of their annual fund raisers. Century riders typically depart from the Solvang Scandinavian Inn and the Santa Maria Hilton Hotel between 6am and 9am. The half-century typically starts at 9:30am from both locations. Every year, amateur radio operators provide support for this ride both at the various sag stops and in the roving vehicles. Due to the wide area covered by the riders, assistance from hams in the Santa Maria and Lompoc areas is invaluable. If you have questions regarding this event, please contact Buzz Davis (KE6BQC).

Trout Derby - late March to mid-April at Cachuma Lake (Saturday/Sunday April 3rd/4th, 2004)
The Trout Fishing Derby is a fishing tournament held at Cachuma Lake which benefits the Cachuma Lake Nature Center. The best positions are on the Patrol Boat or at the Marina where the action is (both aquatic animals and people who are fished out of the lake get brought in here). The operators have 3-4 hour shifts and positions are rotated.

~ May ~

Sea to Summit Bike Ride - mid-May in Ventura County
This bike ride, located down south in Ventura County, goes from Ojai to Mt. Pinos. This 150 mile route has a lot of ups and downs (mostly ups) and raises money for the Teen Challenge. The Santa Ynez Valley Amateur Radio Operators assist the Ventura group to provide communications. This one requires an early start to get to Ventura.

Tour de Cure Bike Ride - late-May (Sunday, May 20th, 2001)
This long time bike ride and diabetes fund raiser recently moved from Santa Barbara to the Santa Ynez Valley and will be based out of the Firestone Brewery in Buellton. It has multiple courses including one for kids. The Santa Ynez Valley Amateur Radio Operators will provide communications for this ride.

~ June ~

Santa Ynez Days - 2nd Saturday in June
Santa Ynez Days is usually held on the second Saturday of June. Typically we provide communications for the parade route through downtown Santa Ynez. This is a really short easy day.

Santa Maria Hamfest - June, on or near Father's Day (Sunday, June 20th, 2004)
The Santa Maria Hamfest is one of the summer highlights of the Santa Maria group.

Field Day - fourth weekend in June
Field Day is the last weekend in June. This is a 24 hour event held across the United States where stations compete for the most contacts. The Santa Ynez Valley group does the event for fun and fellowship (and food). The past couple of years we have joined forces with hams from Santa Maria and Lompoc using the VAFB Satellite ARC's site.

~ July ~

Solvang 4th of July Fire Works Show - July 4
The 4th of July Show is held at the Santa Ynez High School. It is sponsored by the Rotary club as a fund raising event.

AYSO Youth Soccer - TBA
The summer AYSO Youth Soccer Tournament is smaller than the January tournament. Again, the Amateur Radio Operators assist by getting the game scores from the multiple locations to the main area.

~ August ~

Santa Barbara Fiesta Parade - early August
The Santa Barbara Fiesta Parade is one of the major annual events held in Santa Barbara. The Parade goes up State Street and is extremely popular. The Santa Ynez Valley Hams help the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club (SBARC) provide needed communications along the parade route.

Santa Barbara Hamfest - mid August
The Santa Barbara Hamfest is one of the summer highlights of the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club (SBARC).

~ October ~

Los Olivos - A Day in the County - October
The Santa Ynez Valley Hams provide communications for the parade.

People Powered Ride - October
The Santa Ynez Valley Hams provide communications for the annual People Powered Ride sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. This is one of the better rides in the valley due in part to the more experienced riders participating.

Rancho San Fernando Rey Trail Riding Competition - late October/early November
The Santa Ynez Valley Arabian Horse Association puts on the Rancho San Fernando Rey Trail Riding Competition, an event sanctioned by the North American Trail Riding Conference and the International Arabian Horse Association. About 60 to 100 riders are expected to participate. The Santa Ynez Valley Amateur Radio Operators provide communications to help coordinate the check-in points. This is a full day event as the operators must be on-site before the horses start out and return after the horses have past. Due to the numerous events in this time frame, help from the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club (SBARC) is greatly appreciated.

~ November ~

SCOR Solvang Prelude Bike Ride - early November
The Solvang Prelude, put on by the SCOR Cardiac Cyclists Club, includes routes for a metric century (about 70 miles), a half century (50 miles), and a quarter century (25 miles). This is a smaller ride than their March century. The Santa Ynez Valley Amateur Radio Operators have been asked to provide communications for this bike ride.

~ December ~

Santa Ynez Valley Amateur Radio Operators Christmas Party - mid December
Every year, the group gets together for a Christmas party at a local restaurant. The previous couple of years it has been held at Linton's in Solvang. It is a great chance for an excuse to get together just for fun! Amateur Radio Operators and their spouses are invited to attend. The invitation is extended to all of Santa Barbara County.
