Summer 2004 begins under the stars in Solvang with Fiddler on the Roof, one of the most acclaimed musicals ever. It plays in the Festival Theatre June 16 - July 18. PCPA Resident Artist David Studwell is featured in the endearing role of Tevye. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. The celebrated score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick features songs loved the world over, "Sunrise, Sunset," "If I Were a Rich Man" and "Matchmaker," to name a few.
Set in the 1930s, Bullshot Crummond is a wonderful takeoff on the old "B" detective movies and has everything from plane crashes to car chases to sword fights, with a little romance thrown in. A comic blend of Austin Powers, Monty Python, Maxwell Smart and Rocky and Bullwinkle, this madcap mystery is filled with plenty of silly fun. Follow British super-sleuth Bullshot Crummond as he attempts to foil the evil doings of Otto Von Burnno - the second most dangerous man in Europe - and his deliciously evil dame, Lenya. Enjoy lots of thrills and heroic exploits as the bungling Crummond strives to save England and Miss Rosemary Fenton, a true English rose. The International Herald Tribune calls it "Uproarious!" Bullshot Crummond plays July 2 - 17 in Santa Maria's Marian Theatre, then July 23 - August 8, in the Festival Theatre, Solvang
PCPA Theaterfest in association with Prima Entertainment is pleased to present the world premiere of The Wildest!!!, a celebration of the music of Louis Prima and Keely Smith. The show is conceived by their daughters, Toni Elizabeth Prima and Luanne Prima, as well as choreographer Thomas Porras and Director Randy Johnson who also was the original producer of Always…Patsy Cline and director of the historic Elvis-The Concert. This exciting new production features over 40 tunes performed on stage with a live band, including "I've Got You Under My Skin," "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody," "That Old Black Magic," "Sing, Sing, Sing," and "I Wish You Love." Louis Prima and Keely Smith's musical sounds and style defined an era that has transcended generations and has become timeless in its appeal.
Be part of the happening at PCPA Theaterfest this summer - where the hip and cool will gather to swing to the musical sounds of Louis Prima and Keely Smith. The Wildest!!! plays from July 23 - August 7 in Santa Maria, then August 13 - 29 in the outdoor Festival Theatre.
Light Up the Sky is the backstage theatre comedy by Pulitzer Prize winning author Moss Hart (You Can't Take It With You, The Man Who Came To Dinner). See what the producers are doing backstage as they try to deal with the traumas and triumphs of opening night. Written in 1949, this insider's view of the comic horrors of creating a Broadway show offers a rare look at the business's relationships and personalities stretched to the breaking point. Set in a Boston hotel suite of the Ritz Carlton, Light Up the Sky contrasts the glamorous onstage with the neurotic backstage. None of the zany cast of characters, including the temperamental leading lady, the flamboyant director, the lowbrow producer and the sensitive young playwright, is safe from Hart's loving mockery. "A noisy and rollicking comedy about the art of the drama." New York Daily News. Light Up the Sky plays in the Marian Theatre from August 13 - 28 then in the Solvang Festival Theatre from September 3 - 19.
Closing the Summer Season is the award-winning Quilters which chronicles the lives of women who helped tame America's wild frontiers. Quilters is a musical mosaic stitching together the joys and sorrows of the pioneer woman through the designing of a quilt. The story centers on a mother who gathers her six daughters to piece together her "Legacy Quilt." Song, dance and monologues create a heartwarming ritual in which they make the quilt through different patterns or "blocks" that symbolize events in their lives. As these events are enacted on stage the quilt blocks are sewn together. The final product is a testament to the strength, creativity and spirit of all pioneer women. Newsweek Magazine describes it as "A tender and moving theatre work, a human patchwork rippling with the breeze of memory." It plays in the Marian Theatre, Santa Maria, September 3-18 and runs September 24-October 10, in the Festival Theatre, Solvang.
