Los Olivos, CA -

The Los Olivos Business Organization invites you to experience the unique small town charm and friendly Los Olivos lifestyle during its 33rd annual Day in the Country event, Saturday, October 19, from 6:30am-3:45pm.

Visitors can kick off the morning with a fundraising pancake breakfast sponsored by the Santa Ynez Valley Boosters at St. Mark’s In-The-Valley Episcopal Church. Or, for the more energetic, there is a Fun Run / Walk for adults and children sponsored by Platinum Performance (interested participants can sign up online or the morning of the event).

This year there are even more activities to enjoy - from cheering on the hometown parade featuring Grand Marshal Sylvia Remmenga, shopping with over 100 craft and artisan vendors, participating in a fundraising pie contest sponsored by the 8th Grade Los Olivos Elementary School students (applications available online), enjoying live music by “Bone Dog” and “Corner of Nowhere” while feasting on delicious gourmet food, to experiencing “Step into Nature” sponsored by the nonprofit NatureTrack!

“Step into Nature”, located in Saarloos Park, will include activities for all ages such as a Rock Climbing Wall, Mechanical Bull, and a Surf Simulator in addition to nature games, live animal demonstrations, bike rentals, getting-outdoors-related exhibitors, and more! The Los Olivos Business Organization (LOBO) is proud to honor long-time community supporter and current Executive Director Sylvia Remmenga as the Grand Marshall in this year’s parade. She has served on the Los Olivos Business Organization Board for the past nine years – President of the Board from 2005-2007 and Executive Director for the past two years. She has served as Chairperson for Day in the Country for eight years and Olde Fashioned Christmas for three years.

Riding with her in the parade will be past LOBO Board Presidents Mark Herthel and Sam Marmorstein. “If anyone deserves the recognition of being the Los Olivos Grand marshall, it’s you. You have lead the charge to keep the Los Olivos character strong,” remarked Herthel. Says Remmenga, “I am honored to be chosen - my association with Los Olivos began in 2002 when I became a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Los Olivos, whose motto is ‘Service Above Self’.“

Since that time, she has fully embraced that motto and given countless hours of service. As President of the Rotary Club in 2003-2004, she presided over a major fundraising event, “Art for the Park” to raise money towards the purchase of Lavinia Campbell Park in Los Olivos. In 2003, Rotary International challenged all Rotary Clubs to build something in their community to honor Rotary’s Centennial Year in 2005. All the Rotary Clubs in the Valley joined together, and Sylvia was honored to work on the committee that chose “Sunny Fields Park” as their project. She continues to work with Fred Lageman, Solvang Parks & Recreation Director, on many projects at the park. In 2009, the Valley Foundation chose Remmenga as their “Woman of the Year” in recognition of her service in the community.

Day in the Country is a community event, which has drawn deep support from many of the local businesses such as the Alamo Pintado Equine Clinic, Corner House Coffee, El Rancho Market, Fess Parker Family, Hollister & Brace, J. Woeste, Jedlicka’s Saddlery, Jones & Jones LLP, Journeys of Distinction, Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café, MacFarlane, Faletti & Co., LLP, Marborg Industries, Mattei’s Tavern, Mike & Micah Brady – Prudential Realty, NatureTrack, Nielsen Buildling Materials, Inc, Platinum Performance, Rotary Club of Los Olivos, Saarloos & Sons, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Star Drug Company, The Watering Hole, and major support from Union Bank. a Fun Run / Walk for adults and children sponsored by Platinum Performance (interested participants can sign up online or the morning of the event).
