25th Annual Vaquero Show and Sale

The public is invited to attend the 25th annual Vaquero Show & Sale celebration from Friday, November 13 through Sunday, November 15, 2009—honoring the lifestyle and renowned horsemanship of the California Vaquero (cowboy).

Vaqueros developed on the expansive cattle ranchos of Central California during the Spanish/Mexican Colonial period and blended classic European horsemanship and the ‘rough and ready’ riding style of early California ranchers with apparel, tack, saddles and other unique equipment.

A highlight of the weekend celebration is the gathering of noted artisans and collectors from throughout the western United States displaying and selling hand-tooled leather saddles, braided Vaquero-styled riatas, custom boots, bridles, reins and other horse tack as well as Western art, apparel, memorabilia and collectibles. Here is the 2009 schedule of events:

Friday, November 13, 2009, 4:00-7:00 pm:
Preview Party at the Historical Museum, 3596 Sagunto Street, Santa Ynez. Cocktails and “horse d’oeuvres” combined with live entertainment and early buying privileges. Heritage Ranch Sponsors ceremonial branding of Carriage House Doors by Cowboy Joe Chaves. (Heritage Ranch sponsorships are available with $1,000+ donation.) Party Tickets only: $20 at the door.

7:00-9:30 pm:
Gala Dinner of grilled surf & turf catered by Epicurean Cowboy at the Solvang Veterans Hall at 1475 Mission Drive. Meet 2009 Honored Vaquera Audrey O'Brien Griffin, the 2008 Cowgirl Hall of Fame inductee and horsewoman who embodies the spirit and love of the horse that epitomizes the Vaquero tradition. She is renowned for her Roman Riding stunts in the 1950’s as one of the Flying Valkyries. Meet 2009 Honored Vaquero Artist Mehl Lawson, a superb bronze sculptor known for his talent in capturing the world of the vaquero and the culture of the Pacific Slope in his many bronze works and braided rawhide; and meet 2009 Honored Vaquero Craftsman Jeremiah Watt from Coalinga, California, where he and his family do silversmithing, saddle making, and build a line of tools and saddle hardware. A lively live auction will also be held. A Gala Dinner ticket includes admission to Preview Party; price at $65 each, reservations and advance purchase required by November 6.

Saturday, November 14, 2009, 9:00 am-5:00 pm:
Vaquero Show & Sale at the Historical Museum. $5 day pass or $7 for two-day pass

11:00 am:Equestrian Sheila Varian Vaquero horsemanship demonstration
11:00am-2:00pm: BBQ Beef Tri-tip Lunch available for purchase in Museum courtyard.
2:00 pm: Doug Cox presents "Art of the Western Saddle"
1 pm – 4 pm: Nicollete Burnie and Stonehorse perform country western favorites in the courtyard.

Sunday, November 15, 2009 9:00 am - 3:00 pm:
Vaquero Show & Sale at the Historical Museum. $5 for day pass
11:00 am: Bruce Sandifer – Vaquero style roping demonstration
11:00am-2:00pm: BBQ Beef Tri-tip Lunch available for purchase in Museum courtyard.
2:00 pm: Raffle drawing for headstall fitted with Chuck Irwin bit and horsehair mecate.

All proceeds from the Vaquero Show benefit the non-profit Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum in its mission to collect, protect and preserve the rich history of the Santa Ynez Valley.
