Safe and Sober Grad Night
Posted: Saturday, June 10, 2006
By: Rosanne Masi Schroeder (Expired article)Santa Ynez, CA -
Continuing a tradition that began in 1998, the parents of Santa Ynez Valley High School graduating seniors are planning an all night extravaganza following the commencement ceremony on June 16.
This year’s theme is “Caribbean Cruise.” The old gym and adjoining areas will be transformed into a festival of activities including karaoke, casino Black Jack tables, a Bungee Run,
Boxing, a mechanical bull, movies, a hypnotist and magician, and an opportunity for the students to win great prizes. Food and beverages will be provided for the bash that runs from 9:30 pm to 5:00 am.
To make this event a reality, the organizers have turned to the community for funding for both the party and also to provide scholarships so that every student who wants to attend can do so. Prize donations have, also been a part of community involvement in the past. The long list of items contributed by local businesses have included everything from cameras and beach chairs to savings bonds, and gift certificates for hair and nail services, restaurants, and clothing.
Everyone is aware of the grim statistics that have been associated with graduation celebrations. The goal of this event is to ensure that every senior has the opportunity to celebrate his or her hard-earned achievements in a protected, supportive, and age-appropriate environment.
This, of course, requires a tremendous amount of work. We rely on parents of seniors and lower classmen to volunteer their time for the continued success of this memorable event. Those interested in volunteering can call Anne Lautensack at 686-1328, or Rosanne Masi Schroeder at 688-4084.
Tickets may be purchased for $55 after June 1, on sale at the school during lunch from 11:40am to 12:20pm. Scholarships are available through Terry Westfall in the Guidance office at 688-6487 ext. 3208.
Those interested in making cash or prize donation may call Elizabeth Breen at 693-8123.
