Los Olivos, CA -

A bus trip to the Autry National Center’s Museum of the American West in Griffith Park, planned for Saturday, January 15, is being co-sponsored by three museums in the Santa Ynez Valley, the Wildling Art Museum, the Elverhoj Museum of History and Art, and the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society Museum.

While the primary purpose of the trip is to see the special exhibition, “Drawn to Yellowstone: Artists in America’s First National Park,” the Museum (which used to be called the Autry Museum of Western Heritage), with its vast collection of Western art and artifacts, is a draw in itself. Recently, the Autry Museum merged with the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, and mounted a special exhibition entitled “Encounters: El Norte—the Spanish and Mexican North,” featuring Indian and Hispanic artifacts from both museums.

The exhibition, “Drawn to Yellowstone,” includes 80 paintings and works on paper spanning 150 years, from the early explorers and landscape painters such as Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Hill, to contemporary artists reflecting on the social history or environmental significance of the Park.

The bus will depart from Los Olivos at 8:15 a.m., making one stop for passengers in Santa Barbara at 9:00 a.m., returning to Santa Barbara around 4:30 p.m. and to the Valley around 5:15 p.m. The fee includes round-trip bus transportation, beverages and snacks en route, admission to the Museum of the American West, and a guided tour of the “Drawn to Yellowstone” exhibition with the curator, Amy Scott. Lunch, which is not included in the price, can be enjoyed in the Museum’s cafeteria or you can bring your own picnic.

While the cost for members of any of the three co-sponsoring museums is $60.00, (non-members $65.00), you do not have to be a museum member to register for the trip. Pre-registration is required and must be done through the Wildling Art Museum, either by calling 688-1082, or by sending a check made out to the Wildling Art Museum, P.O., Box 907, Los Olivos, CA 93441, indicating which museum should be credited.
